On Thursday, August 30th, after terrific news that our engine was healed we spent the afternoon with Rich & Carol on The Great Catsby. We had motored into Point Judith Pond and were offered a mooring ball for the night from a kind cruiser who was on his way out for the weekend. Aboard The Great Catsby, Rich shared his wisdom of cruising the Intracoastal Waterway and showed us various gadgets that would make our lives simpler. Rich was very kind to drive us to Wal-Mart and Stop & Shop for provisioning. We also refilled one 10-lb propane tank, thrilled it was just nearing empty since we've used it since we moved aboard on June 21st. (We have two 10-lb tanks, each is about half the size of what you'd use to grill at home.) Rich & Carol came aboard Rode Trip for a quick tour before our departure on Friday morning.
Rode Trip was in her glory on Friday afternoon on a broad reach from Point Judith to Newport. Finally a great sailing day!
We anchored back at Newport Harbor. Sally & Steve arrived from Pennsylvania later that evening. Brian and I kayaked across the harbor, to avoid the King Park dinghy dock drama, and met them at Bowens Warf for dinner at The Landing.
Saturday was a jam packed day starting with...you guessed it...a leisurely breakfast aboard Rode Trip! Sally & Steve enjoyed the harbor views from the cockpit while Brian prepared breakfast and we planned out the day's events.
First stop, via Ocean Avenue, was Fort Adams. We stopped to stroll the grounds and watch the 12 Meter Fleet as they headed out to start the weekend's regatta.
We continued along Ocean Avenue and stopped at the beach for some tide-pooling.
We took a lunch break downtown at Benjamin's where from 12pm-2pm daily they have a raw bar happy hour. We sipped on Newport Storm and enjoyed fresh oysters, clams, and fried calimari. Afterward, back to Bellevue Avenue where we took an audio/walking tour of The Elms. We learned a lot about the Newport social scene during summers at The Elms and how the mansion was operated. The mansion and grounds were beautiful.
It had been an eventful, hot day. We joined Steve & Sally back at their hotel to freshen up and relax a bit before heading back to town for the night life. On the way, Sally & I had a mini-shopping spree at the bikini store! We enjoyed a BBQ dinner later that evening and people watching under the blue moon.
On Sunday we had breakfast in King Park and then headed to the Cliff Walk for more of those glorious Newport views.
Our day was complete after a visit to the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The exhibit was spectacular and we had a nice walk on one of the point trails. After lunch in town, we bid my parents farewell.
Back at Rode Trip, we had some decisions to make regarding jury duty...do we run for it and make way for Bermuda?
