The New (never improved) Alvor Anchor Club

  Monday, October 22, 2018 / Stephanie / Exploration

We set sail for Portugal from the Azores, basically the only location the weather would allow, and traveled for 7-days of unpleasant upwind pounding.  Arriving at Portugal completed our second Atlantic crossing.  We returned to Portugal's southern coast, an area which already held fond memories for us and still has much to explore. Ponta de Sagres At Portimao, we met great new friends, John, Kara, and Dean (s/y Sentijn) and reunited with our friends, Bill and Grace (s/v Calico Skies).  Soon we all found ourselves anchored in Alvor, waiting for weather.  Alvor is a lovely little town with all the cruiser essentials; free dinghy dock, supermarket, laundromat, affordable happy hour specials, and weekly farmers' market.  There is a beautiful boardwalk through a nature preserve (great running spot!) and a cave lined ocean coastline with sprawling, white sand beaches (surf potential!). We had plenty to keep us busy; paddle-boarding, surfing, running/walking, visiting the playground, cooking communal meals, sundowners... oh, and also working on boat projects ...
